The Great American Outdoors Act: Victory for LWCF!
AMC and the LWCF Coalition have achieved a momentous victory for conservation and recreation in America, sought by stakeholders for decades. Since 1964, the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) has been used to conserve thousands of acres across the United States. LWCF does not use any taxpayer dollars but rather reinvests a small portion of revenues from offshore energy development as a conservation offset. And yet, throughout LWCF’s 55-year existence Congress has siphoned billions of dollars from the fund for other non-conservation purposes, which AMC has long fought to change and now finally have won. Last year, Congress ensured the continued existence of the program by permanently reauthorizing LWCF, a victory we built upon to permanently ensure full funding. The Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA), which in addition to fully funding LWCF forever will also provide funding to address the backlog of deferred maintenance in our National Parks and National Forests, passed Congress with overwhelming bipartisan support and was signed into law by President Trump in August. Please join AMC’s LWCF Coalition Manager Amy Lindholm as she recaps the road to legislative success, the lessons learned and winning tactics spearheaded by our staff, volunteers and coalition partners. With your help, we passed the most important conservation bill in a generation! So what comes next?
